Description
Saphris (Asenapine) is an antipsychotic agent. It is typically used to treat schizophrenia (a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally) and bipolar disorder (a mental health condition marked by extreme shifts in mood). It may also have other uses.

Saphris (Asenapine) is typically used twice daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. Sublingual tablets should be placed under the tongue and allowed to completely dissolve. Do not split, crush, chew, or swallow. Avoid eating or drinking for at least 10 minutes after administration. WARNING: Use with caution in patients with cardiac (heart) disease. Use with caution in patients at risk of seizure (a sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain). Use with caution in patients with diabetes (high blood sugar level) or other disorders of glucose (sugar) regulation. Asenapine may increase the risk of death in older adults with dementia (dementia is a syndrome associated with an ongoing decline of brain functioning) and is not approved for this used. In addition to its desired action, Saphris (Asenapine) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause anxiety, change in the sense of taste, dizziness, fatigue, increased appetite. It may cause increased saliva, low blood pressure, mouth pain, involuntary muscle contractions. It may cause muscle aches, slow movements, restlessness, sleepiness, weight gain. Contraindications: Severe hepatic (liver) impairment, hypersensitivity to asenapine or any component of the formulation. Taking Saphris (Asenapine) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Saphris (Asenapine) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
