Description

Malarone (Atovaquone Proguanil) is an antiprotozoal agent. It is typically used to treat and prevent malaria by killing the parasite that causes malaria. The parasite, called Plasmodium falciparum, is spread to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Malarone  (Atovaquone Proguanil) is typically taken once daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. Administer with food or milk-based drink at the same time each day. If patient vomits within 1 hour of administration, repeat the dose. For patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets, tablets may be crushed and mixed with condensed milk just prior to administration.

WARNING: Absorption of atovaquone may be decreased in patients who have diarrhea or vomiting, monitor closely and consider use of an antiemetic (a medication to stop vomiting). If severe, consider use of an alternative antimalarial.

In addition to its desired action, Malarone  (Atovaquone Proguanil) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause abdominal pain, back pain, constipation
It may cause coughing, diarrhea, difficulty sleeping
It may cause dizziness, hair loss, headache, heartburn

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to atovaquone, proguanil, or any component of the formulation, prophylactic (prevention) used in severe renal (kidney) impairment 

Taking Malarone  (Atovaquone Proguanil) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.

A treatment with Malarone  (Atovaquone Proguanil) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Malarone  (Atovaquone Proguanil)
