Description

Dukoral Vaccine (Cholera and Travelers Diarrhea Vaccine) typically used to prevent travelers’ diarrhea caused by bacteria called enterotoxigenic E. Coli (ETEC) and cholera (infection of the small intestine by some strains of the bacterium Vibrio cholerae) by adults and children 2 years of age and older. It is recommended for people traveling to areas with a high risk of cholera or travelers’ diarrhea.

Dukoral Vaccine (Cholera and Travelers Diarrhea Vaccine) is typically given as two doses orally. Take 2 doses orally (by mouth) at least 1 week (up to 6 weeks) apart. Take the 2nd dose at least 1 week after the first dose and at least 1 week before your trip. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. Dissolve the powder from the sachet in a glass of cool water (approximately 150 mL). Do not use any other liquid. Shake the small glass vial that contains the vaccine to mix it well. Open the vial and add the vaccine to the liquid in the glass. Stir well and drink immediately. If the mixture is not taken immediately, it should be kept at room temperature and consumed within 2 hours of mixing.

WARNING: Like all vaccines,  may not fully protect 100% of those who get it. It may not be as effective for people with a weakened immune system. This vaccine will not protect against diarrhea caused by other organisms. Travelers should take all necessary precautions to avoid contact with, or ingestion of, potentially contaminated sources of food or water (e.g., drink bottled or boiled water, wash hands before eating and after using toilet facilities).

In addition to its desired action, this medication may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause allergic reactions. 
It may cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to the vaccine or other components of the vaccine, acute illness, including those accompanied by fever.

Taking this medication during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
