Description
Dantrium (Dantrolene) is a muscle relaxant agent. It is typically used to treat muscle tightness and cramping (spasms) caused by certain nerve disorders (brain or spinal cord injury). It is also used preoperatively (before a surgical operation) to prevent or attenuate the development of signs of malignant hyperthermia (a severe reaction to certain drugs used for anesthesia that includes a dangerously high body temperature, rigid muscles or spasms, a rapid heart rate). It may also have other uses.

Dantrium (Dantrolene)'s dosage depends on the condition (usual range: 25-400 mg). However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. Take it with or without food WARNING: May cause central nervous system depression, which may impair physical or mental abilities, patients must be cautioned about performing tasks that require mental alertness. May cause hepatotoxicity (liver toxicity). Patients should be instructed to contact their physician should signs or symptoms of hepatotoxicity (e.g., discolored faeces, nausea, vomiting) occur during therapy. Use oral therapy with caution in patients with hepatic (liver) problems. Use oral therapy with caution in patients with respiratory problems. Use oral therapy with caution in patients impaired heart function resulting from myocardial disease (abnormalities of the cardiac muscle). In addition to its desired action, Dantrium (Dantrolene) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause abdominal or stomach cramps, chills and fever, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, dizziness. It may cause drowsiness, headache, loss of appetite, muscle weakness. It may cause nausea or vomiting, skin rash, sweating, unusual tiredness. Contraindications: if you are allergic to dantrolene or to any of the ingredients of the medication, if you have active liver disease. Taking Dantrium (Dantrolene) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Dantrium (Dantrolene) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
