Description
Aranesp (Darbepoetin Alfa) replaces the erythropoietin (a molecule giving the signal to produce red blood cells), that is lacking in people whose own body cannot produce enough. It is also used to treat people with cancer who develop anemia (low red blood cell count) because of chemotherapy treatment. It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Aranesp (Darbepoetin Alfa)'s dosage depends on the condition and body weight (usual starting dose: 2.25 µg/kg given once a week or 500 µg once every 3 weeks). However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Darbepoetin alfa is available only as an injection, which is given under the skin (subcutaneous) or into a vein (intravenous). People who receive the medication under the skin can usually be taught to give themselves the injection. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. WARNING: This medication may increase the chance of blood clot formation, causing a reduction of blood flow to the organs or extremities, and which, in some cases, can cause death. Under some conditions, Aranesp (Darbepoetin Alfa) may cause tumors to progress or reoccur more quickly than for people who are not using darbepoetin alfa. Medications such as Aranesp may increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events (heart attacks, strokes, blood clots, or death). It may cause pure red cell aplasia (PRCA), a condition in which a person's bone marrow stops producing red blood cells, leading to severe anemia. Use with caution in patients with hypertension (high blood pressure), seizure disorders, diabetes mellitus, and kidney disease. In addition to its desired action, Aranesp (Darbepoetin Alfa) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause a general feeling of tiredness or weakness. It may cause pain, stinging, redness, or swelling around the injection site. It may cause an increase in blood pressure (hypertension) or swelling (edema). It may cause shortness of breath (dyspnea), cough, or stomach pain. Contraindications: Serious allergic reaction to darbepoetin alfa or any component of the formulation. Patients with uncontrolled hypertension (high blood pressure), or pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) that begins after treatment with darbepoetin alfa or other erythropoietin protein drugs should not use Aranesp (Darbepoetin Alfa). Taking Aranesp (Darbepoetin Alfa) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Aranesp (Darbepoetin Alfa) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Aranesp (Darbepoetin Alfa)
