Xgeva (Denosumab)

Xgeva (Denosumab) is typically given once every four weeks, as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous). However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. You should not inject XGEVA into the muscle (intramuscular), into your veins (intravenous) or between the layers of the skin (intradermal). The injection can be in your upper arm, upper thigh, or abdomen. The injection should be administered under the supervision of your doctor who is familiar with this drug. You may be able to give yourself XGEVA injections only if you have been trained in giving the injection and your doctor thinks you are capable of doing it correctly and if your doctor follows up with you as necessary.

WARNING: Bone fractures have been reported in patients receiving denosumab. Skin reactions and rash (which are not necessarily specific to the injection site) have been reported. Consider discontinuing if severe symptoms occur. Hypercalcemia (high calcium level) and hypokalemia (low calcium level) are seen in patients on denosumab therapy. incidence of infections may be increased. Use with caution in patients with renal (kidney) impairment. These events may occur at anytime during therapy and without warning.

In addition to its desired action, Xgeva (Denosumab) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause peripheral water retention, skin rash and skin reactions.
It may cause low calcium levels, high calcium levels, diarrhea and nausea.
It may cause respiratory infections, cough and back pain.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity severe allergy (systemic) to denosumab or any component of the formulation, pre-existing hypocalcemia (low calcium levels), pregnancy.

Taking Xgeva (Denosumab) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant, contact your family doctor.
