Description
Epival (Divalproex) is an anticonvulsant agent. It is typically used to manage and control certain types of seizures. It can be use alone or in combination with other seizure control medications. It is also used for people 18 years of age and older to treat bipolar disorder (extreme mood swings that include emotional highs and lows). It may also have other uses.

Epival (Divalproex) is typically used as prescribed by your doctor. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. The dosage is based on your age, weight, medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. Swallow whole, do not crush or chew. Divalproex may cause stomach upset, taking with food or slowly increasing the dose may decrease stomach upset should it occur. WARNING: Do not use in case of liver disease. Use with caution in elderly patients, may be more sensitive to sedating effects and dehydration. Should not be discontinued abruptly In addition to its desired action, Epival (Divalproex) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, drowsiness, hair loss, blurred/double vision, change in menstrual periods It may cause ringing in the ears, shakiness (tremor), unsteadiness, weight changes It may cause infection, nervousness, pain Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to valproic acid, divalproex, derivatives, or any component of the formulation, liver disease or significant impairment, urea cycle disorders (disease that affects how the body removes the waste from body), prevention of migraine in pregnant women and women of childbearing potential who are not using effective contraception Taking Epival (Divalproex) during pregnancy is harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Epival (Divalproex) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
