Description
Silenor (Doxepin) is an antidepressant. It is typically used for the treatment of depression, including psychotic or mental and bipolar depression. Bipolar disorder causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). It may also have other uses.

Silenor (Doxepin) is usually given once daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. Administer with food to decrease stomach upset. WARNING: Antidepressants increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults (18 to 24 years of age) with major depressive disorder and other psychiatric or mental disorders. Bone fractures have been associated with antidepressant treatment. Use with caution in patients with a history of heart disease. Use with caution in patients with liver impairment. Use with caution in patients with respiratory compromise. These events may occur at anytime during therapy and without warning. In addition to its desired action, Silenor (Doxepin) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause hypertension (high blood pressure), edema or water retention, flushing, hypotension (low blood pressure), tachycardia (high heartbeat), It may cause changes in blood sugar levels, change in sexual drive and enlargement of breast size. It may cause tremor, weakness, vision problems, skin rash, dizziness and upper respiratory tract infections (coughing, runny nose, sneezing and throat pain). Contraindications: Hypersensitivity or severe allergy to doxepin, dibenzoxazepine (similar agents), or any component of the formulation, high pressure in the eyes, urinary retention, use of antidepressants within 14 days, severe hepatic (liver) disease, use in children, heart attack and other severe heart problems. Taking Silenor (Doxepin) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Silenor (Doxepin) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
