Description

Neupogen (Filgrastim) helps the bone marrow produce white blood cells which help the body fight infections. It is typically used to prevent infections caused by febrile neutropenia in people receiving a type of chemotherapy that slows down white blood cell production. Febrile neutropenia is a common complication of cancer therapy, characterized by a reduction in neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) below normal counts and a fever. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Neupogen (Filgrastim) is typically given once no sooner than 24 hours after the chemotherapy has been given. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Filgrastim is given by subcutaneous (under the skin) or intravenous (into a vein) injection. For subcutaneous injection, administer into the outer upper arm, abdomen, front middle thigh, or the upper outer buttocks area. Rotate the injection sites, do not inject into areas that are tender, red, bruised, hardened, scaly, or scarred, or sites with stretch marks. Filgrastim is usually given under medical supervision. If you are giving filgrastim to yourself, your doctor or healthcare professional will instruct you on how to use filgrastim properly. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist.

WARNING: Some people with breast or lung cancer who receive filgrastim may have an increased risk of myelodysplasia (a type of rare blood cancer where you don't have enough healthy blood cells) and certain types of leukemia (blood cancer). Filgrastim has been reported to cause "capillary leak syndrome" (CLS), a condition where blood leaks out of the small blood vessels into the tissues of the body. This medication may cause an enlarged spleen, and there have been reports of the spleen rupturing. It may cause heart-related conditions such as heart attacks and abnormal heart rhythms.

In addition to its desired action, Neupogen (Filgrastim) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause mild-to-moderate bone or muscle pains or aches.
It may cause reactions at the injection site (e.g., redness, swelling, or itching).
It may cause chest pain, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, or shortness of breath.

Contraindications: History of serious allergic reactions to human granulocyte colony-stimulating factors, such as filgrastim or Pegfilgrastim, or any component of the formulation.

Taking Neupogen (Filgrastim) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.

A treatment with Neupogen (Filgrastim) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Neupogen (Filgrastim)
