Description

Puregon (Follitropin Beta) is a fertility drug. It is a synthetic version of the naturally-occurring follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), a hormone produced by the pituitary gland (a small, bean-shaped gland situated at the base of your brain) that helps egg development in the ovaries. It is typically used to help with fertility by women having assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures (e.g., in-vitro fertilization) in combination with other medications. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Puregon (Follitropin Beta)'s dosage depends on the condition being treated. Your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a schedule that is more appropriate for you. The best place for subcutaneous (under the skin) injections is around the navel or the upper thigh. The place of injection should be varied for each injection. The best place for intramuscular injections is the upper outer part of the buttock muscle. Use the solution in cartridges with the Puregon Pen. To prevent painful injections and minimize leakage from the injection site, slowly administer the dose. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist.

WARNING: This medication may increase the chance of blood clot formation, causing reduction of blood flow to organs or the extremities. It may also increase the risk of having an ectopic pregnancy (when the baby develops in one of the fallopian tubes (either of a pair of tubes along which eggs travel from the ovaries to the uterus) instead of in the uterus, which is the womb), it is important to have an early ultrasound to ensure that the baby is developing inside the uterus. Such fertility treatments may increase the chances of having multiple births (i.e., twins). Some women may experience ovarian enlargement associated with abdominal bloating or pain. In most cases, the bloating and pain stop without treatment within 2 or 3 weeks. Treatment can cause a condition called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). With OHSS, too many follicles (small sacs of fluid in the ovaries that contain a developing egg) grow and cause abdominal or pelvic discomfort or pain (pain in the area of the body below the abdomen that is located between the hip bones), nausea, vomiting, and weight gain. Ovarian torsion (twisting of an ovary) may occur. Twisting of the ovary could cause the blood flow to the ovary to be cut off.

In addition to its desired action, Puregon (Follitropin Beta) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause aches and pains, breast tenderness, breast development (in men), pain, redness, or irritation at the place of injection.
It may cause acne, hair loss, dry skin, headache, and fatigue.
It may cause constipation, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
It may cause flu-like symptoms (e.g., fever, chills, muscle aches, joint pain, headache, fatigue) and general feeling of being unwell.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to recombinant human follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) products, streptomycin (antibiotic), neomycin (antibiotic), or any component of the formulation. Do not use in case of high levels of FSH indicating primary gonadal failure (when the gonads/reproductive organs don't function as efficiently), uncontrolled nongonadal (not related to the reproductive organs) endocrinopathies (disease of the gland) such thyroid (gland in the neck), adrenal (gland on top of the kidneys), pituitary (gland in the brain) glands. Do not use in case of tumors of the ovary, breast, uterus (womb), testis, hypothalamus (part of the brain), or pituitary gland. Patients with abnormal vaginal bleeding of undetermined origin, or ovarian cysts or enlargement not due to polycystic ovary syndrome (a condition in which the ovaries produce an abnormal amount of the male sex hormone) should not use Puregon (Follitropin Beta).

Taking Puregon (Follitropin Beta) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Pregnant women should not use this product.

A treatment with Puregon (Follitropin Beta) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Puregon (Follitropin Beta)
