Foradil (Formoterol)

Additional information

Foradil (Formoterol) is typically taken as 1 capsule inhaled using the Aerolizer inhaler twice daily, in the morning and evening. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. The powder contents of the capsule are intended to be inhaled. Do not swallow the capsules. Small pieces of gelatin may reach the mouth or throat after inhalation (this effect is minimized by not piercing the capsule more than once), if this occurs, the capsule is made of edible gelatin and is not harmful if ingested. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. 
 
WARNING: If used alone without corticosteroids (steroids used in the treatment of asthma), Foradil (Formoterol) may cause death due to severe asthma symptoms (a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus). Do not stop using corticosteroid medications when you are prescribed Formoterol. Occasionally, inhaled medications such as Formoterol may cause the airways to spasm and close up, making breathing even more difficulty (bronchospasm) and can be life-threatening. Use with caution in patients with diabetes (may increase blood sugar level), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid, a gland in the neck), or seizure disorders. 
 
In addition to its desired action, Foradil (Formoterol) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause agitation, nervousness, trembling, or palpitations (rapid heartbeat). 
It may cause dizziness, headache, or trouble sleeping. 
It may cause muscle cramps, increase blood pressure, chest pain, or nausea. 
 
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to Formoterol or any component of the formulation. It should not be used as monotherapy (one type of treatment), without use of a concomitant inhaled corticosteroid, in the maintenance treatment of asthma.
 
Taking Foradil (Formoterol) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
