It is typically used to treat edema (swelling) caused by heart failure, ascites (fluid collection in the abdomen) due to cirrhosis of the liver (replacement of the normal liver tissue by scar tissue), kidney disease, or pulmonary edema (excess fluid in the lungs). It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Lasix (Furosemide) is typically taken one to three times a day. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for your child. When prescribed to children, Lasix is usually administered in the form of a solution and at a dose that will be determined by the healthcare provider. It should be taken on an empty stomach. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. WARNING: This medication is a strong diuretic (water pill). It can lead to a profound water loss and electrolyte depletion. Use with caution in patients with diabetes as it may increase blood sugar levels. In addition to its desired action, Lasix (Furosemide) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause hearing loss or ringing in the ear (ototoxicity), kidney injury due to fluid loss, or electrolyte depletion (low blood levels of calcium, potassium, or magnesium). It may cause an increase in blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia), orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure that happens when you stand up from sitting or lying down). It may cause diarrhea, constipation, nausea, or vomiting. It may cause thirst, dry mouth, or blurred vision. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to Furosemide or any component of the formulation. Do not use in case of anuria (failure of the kidneys to produce urine). A treatment with Lasix (Furosemide) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Lasix (Furosemide)
