Description
Glatect (Glatiramer) is an immunomodulatory agent (substance that affects the functioning of the immune system). It is typically used to treat multiple sclerosis (a potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord). It may also have other uses.

Glatect (Glatiramer) is typically used once daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. For subcutaneous (under the skin) administration in the arms, abdomen, hips, or thighs. Patients should be instructed in aseptic self-injection techniques to assure the safe administration of Glatect. The first injection should be performed under the supervision of an appropriately qualified healthcare professional. WARNING: Some people have a rare reaction that starts immediately after the injection and consists of flushing (red face), chest pain with palpitations (an abnormally rapid or irregular beating of the heart), anxiety, and difficulty breathing. Particular caution is therefore advised regarding the use of Glatect in such patients. Lipoatrophy (term describing the localized loss of fat tissue) and skin necrosis (the death of body tissue) may occur at injection site at various times after treatment onset (sometimes after several months) and is thought to be permanent, there is no known therapy for lipoatrophy, to minimize these events, patient must follow injection technique and rotate sites daily. In addition to its desired action, Glatect (Glatiramer) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause back pain, headache, injection site reactions (e.g., bleeding, pain, redness, or swelling). It may cause joint pain, nausea, neck pain, skin rash, dyspnea (shortness of breath) and chest pain. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to glatiramer acetate, mannitol, or any component of the formulation. Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Glatect (Glatiramer) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
