Cortenema (Hydrocortisone)

Cortenema (Hydrocortisone) is typically given as one enema daily for 2 or 3 weeks, and every second day after that. It is used in the evening before going to bed. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Lie on your left side with your right knee bent. Gently insert the lubricated applicator tip into the rectum, pointed slightly toward the navel (umbilicus). Grasp the bottle firmly, then tilt slightly so that the nozzle is aimed toward the back, and squeeze slowly to instill the medication. Remain in this position for at least 30 minutes to allow a thorough distribution of the medication internally. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. 
 
WARNING: Corticosteroids such as hydrocortisone may cause an increase in blood sugar levels. Use with caution in patients with diabetes. It may cause glaucoma (increased eye pressure) to worsen. Stopping This medication suddenly may cause symptoms of the illness to return. Gradual tapering of the dose is required. Use with caution in patients with kidney disease, thyroid disease (gland found in the neck), or osteoporosis (weakened bones). Damage to the rectum may occur from improper or careless insertion of the enema tip. 
 
In addition to its desired action, Cortenema (Hydrocortisone) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause dizziness, dry, scaly, thin, or fragile skin.
It may cause an increased appetite, increased sweating, sensation of spinning, or weight gain. 
It may cause thinning hair on the scalp.
 
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to hydrocortisone or any component of the formulation. Patients with systemic (whole body) fungal infections, or who have undergone an ileocolostomy (a surgical operation) should not use Cortenema (Hydrocortisone). 
 
Taking Cortenema (Hydrocortisone) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
