Description
Ferrlecit (Iron) is an iron supplement. It is typically used for the treatment of iron-deficiency anemia in patients 6 years and older with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis (a procedure where a dialysis machine and a special filter called an artificial kidney) in conjunction with supplemental erythropoietin therapy (agents are used often for people with long-term kidney disease and anemia). Anemia is a condition in which you lack enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to your body’s tissues. It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Ferrlecit (Iron)'s dosage depends on the condition, it is usually given once daily administered over 60 minutes and over around 8 dialysis sessions. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. It will be given to you by your doctor or nurse in a clinical or hospital setting. WARNING: Use with caution in the elderly. Hypotension (low blood pressure) may occur, usually resolves within 1 to 2 hours. Use only in patients with documented iron deficiency. These events may occur at anytime during therapy and without warning. In addition to its desired action, Ferrlecit (Iron) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause hypotension (low blood pressure), hypertension (high blood pressure) and tachycardia (fast heart rate). It may cause headaches, dizziness, vomiting, nausea and diarrhea. It may cause abnormal erythrocytes (red blood cells which carry oxygen in the blood), injection site reaction, muscle cramps and dyspnea (shortness of breath). Contraindications: Hypersensitivity (severe allergy) to ferric gluconate or any component of the formulation. Anemias not associated with iron deficiency and where there is evidence of iron overload (e.g., hemochromatosis, chronic hemolysis) or iron utilization disorders, serious hypersensitivity to other parenteral iron products, severe inflammatory diseases of the liver or kidneys. Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Ferrlecit (Iron) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Ferrlecit (Iron)
