Description
Mirena IUD (Levonorgestrel) is a hormonal agent. It is typically used to prevent pregnancy. It is also used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding. It may also have other uses.

Mirena IUD (Levonorgestrel) may be inserted into the uterine cavity at anytime during the menstrual cycle once it is determined that the patient is not pregnant. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. It will be inserted to you by your physician. To be inserted into the uterine (the womb) cavity, consider administering analgesics or cervical (the organ connecting the uterus and vagina) anesthetic prior to insertion. Insert into the uterine cavity to the recommended depth with the provided insertion device, should not be forced into the uterus (the womb). Remove if not positioned properly and insert a new IUD, do not reinsert removed IUD. Exclude uterine perforation if exceptional pain or bleeding occurs after insertion. Ensure device is intact after removal. Check expiration of IUD prior to insertion WARNING: Menstrual bleeding patterns may be altered, especially during the first 3 to 6 months with use of the intrauterine device (IUD) and result in spotting, irregular bleeding, heavy bleeding, etc. The possibility of pregnancy should be considered if menstruation does not occur within 6 weeks of the previous menstrual period. Use with caution in patients with depression In addition to its desired action, this medication may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause headaches, acne, breast tenderness It may cause irregular bleeding, which can improve after six months of use It may cause mood changes, cramping or pelvic pain Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to levonorgestrel or any component of the formulation, pregnancy or suspected pregnancy, postcoital contraception (intervention that allows women to avoid unintended pregnancy after unprotected intercourse), congenital or acquired uterine anomaly, including fibroids (tumors) that distort the uterine cavity and would be incompatible with correct IUD placement, acute pelvic inflammatory disease (an infection of a woman's reproductive organs) or history of pelvic inflammatory disease (unless there has been a subsequent intrauterine pregnancy), postpartum endometritis (an infection that some women develop after giving birth) or infected abortion within past 3 months, known or suspected uterine or cervical malignancy, untreated acute cervicitis (inflammation of the cervix, the lower end of the uterus that opens into the vagina) or vaginitis (an inflammation of the vagina) or other lower genital tract infections until infection is controlled, conditions which increase susceptibility to pelvic infections, unremoved IUD, uterine bleeding of unknown cause, acute liver disease or liver tumors, current or history of known or suspected breast cancer or other hormone-sensitive cancer. Taking this medication during pregnancy is contraindicated and harmful for the baby. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with this medication requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.
