Description
Constella (Linaclotide) relieves constipation. It is typically used to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) and to treat chronic constipation. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the large intestine. Signs and symptoms include cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea or constipation, or both. It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Constella (Linaclotide) is typically given once a day. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. It should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before the first meal of the day. Swallow the whole capsule with water. Patients who have difficulty swallowing can open the capsules and sprinkle the contents over applesauce or mix the contents with water before swallowing. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. WARNING: The most common side effect of Constella (Linaclotide) is diarrhea. If you develop severe, watery diarrhea, it may lead to dehydration, which can quickly become a medical emergency. In addition to its desired action, Constella (Linaclotide) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. It may cause gas or bloating (swelling or feeling of fullness in your abdomen). It may cause headaches, fatigue, or dehydration. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to Linaclotide or any component of the formulation. Pediatric patients below the age of 6 should not use Constella (Linaclotide). Patients with mechanical gastrointestinal (involving the stomach or intestine) obstruction should not use Constella (Linaclotide). Taking Constella (Linaclotide) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Constella (Linaclotide) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
