Description

Lotemax Ointment (Loteprednol) is a corticosteroid agent. It is typically used to treat eye inflammation after cataract (clouding of the lens of the eye) surgery. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Lotemax Ointment (Loteprednol) is typically applied as ½ inch long ribbon into the conjunctival sac (the gap between the eyeball and the eyelid) of the operated eye(s) 4 times daily, starting 24 hours after surgery and continuing for 2 weeks after surgery. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Before using this eye ointment, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water. Do not allow the tip of the ointment tube to touch any surface, including your eyes or fingers. If you are using other medications in the eye, wait at least 15 minutes before applying them. Do not wear contact lenses while you are using loteprednol eye ointment. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist.

WARNING: This medication may cause your vision to blur temporarily. Do not drive or operate machinery until your vision is clear. Loteprednol can increase the chances of getting an eye infection and should not be used for people with an eye infection. Prolonged use of corticosteroids may result in elevated eye pressure (glaucoma), use with caution in patients with glaucoma.

In addition to its desired action, Lotemax Ointment (Loteprednol) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause burning sensation in the eye, eye swelling or discharge, feeling like there is something in the eye, or itching of the eye or eyelid.
It may cause cough, headache, nervousness, runny nose, tiredness, or sore throat.
It may cause painful, dry, or sticky eyes, redness of the eye or eyelid, sensitivity of eyes to sunlight, or blurred vision.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to loteprednol, other corticosteroids, and any component of the formulation. Do not use in case of viral disease of the cornea (the clear outer layer at the front of the eye) and conjunctiva (the tissue that covers the surface of the eyeball) such as herpes simplex or varicella. Patients with mycobacterial (bacterial) infection of the eye, or fungal disease of eye structures, should not use Lotemax Ointment (Loteprednol).

Taking Lotemax Ointment (Loteprednol) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.

A treatment with Lotemax Ointment (Loteprednol) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Lotemax Ointment (Loteprednol)
