Description

Nucala (Mepolizumab) is a monoclonal antibody, which works by blocking the action of a certain natural substance in the body that causes the symptoms of asthma (a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus). It is typically used with other medications to treat a type of asthma called eosinophilic asthma, where there is an increased presence of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell, in your blood. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Nucala (Mepolizumab) is typically injected once every 4 weeks subcutaneously (under the skin). However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Nucala is first given under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional in a clinic or doctor's office where side effects, such as a severe allergic reaction, can be treated immediately. If appropriate, you may be trained to give yourself injections of Nucala (Mepolizumab). Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist.

WARNING: Nucala is not indicated for the treatment of acute (sudden) asthma symptoms or acute exacerbations of asthma. Do not discontinue oral or inhaled corticosteroids abruptly upon initiation of Mepolizumab. Reductions in corticosteroid dose should be gradual, if appropriate. This medication may increase the chances of infections.

In addition to its desired action, Nucala (Mepolizumab) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause headaches, injection site reactions (e.g., redness or irritation), or fatigue.
It may cause stomach pain, back or neck pain, blurred vision, or sore throat.
It may cause sensation of spinning, tingling or numbness, headache, or dizziness.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to Mepolizumab or any component of the formulation

Taking Nucala (Mepolizumab) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. There is no available data regarding the harm of Nucala (Mepolizumab) for the fetus, therefore it is not recommended to use it. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.

A treatment with Nucala (Mepolizumab) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Nucala (Mepolizumab)
