Description

Ditropan XL (Oxybutynin extended-release) is an antispasmodic agent. It is typically used for the treatment of symptoms associated with overactive bladder (e.g., urge urinary incontinence, urgency, frequency, urinary leakage, dysuria (painful or difficult urination)). It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Ditropan XL (Oxybutynin extended-release)'s dosage depends on the condition, it is usually given once daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. Administer with or without food.

WARNING: May increase the risk of exertional heat illness illness with intense exertion in the heat. Use with caution in patients having kidney and liver impairments. Use with caution in patients having dementia or memory loss, patients having parkinson’s disease (parkinson’s disease is a brain disorder that leads to shaking, stiffness and difficulty with walking, balance and coordination) and patients suffering from overactive thyroid gland (a gland in the neck) since it may aggravate their disease symptoms. These events may occur at anytime during therapy and without warning.

In addition to its desired action, Ditropan XL (Oxybutynin extended-release) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause xerostomia (a condition in which the salivary glands in your mouth don't make enough saliva to keep your mouth wet, resulting in dry mouth)
It may cause nausea, constipation, drowsiness and dizziness. 

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to oxybutynin or any component of the formulation, patients with or at risk for uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma (eye problem), urinary retention, gastric retention or conditions with severely decreased stomach motility. When used for self-medication, do not use if you have pain or burning when urinating, blood in urine, unexplained lower back or side pain, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, in males, age <18 years, only experience accidental urine loss when cough, sneeze, or laugh, diagnosis of urinary or gastric retention, glaucoma.

Taking Ditropan XL (Oxybutynin extended-release) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. There is no available data regarding the harm of Ditropan XL (Oxybutynin extended-release) for the fetus, therefore it is not recommended to use it. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
