Pico Salax Cranberry Flavour (Picosulfate Magnesium Citric Acid) is typically used in two doses (sachets) but the timing of each dose can vary and may depend on the time of the examination. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. Empty the contents of one packet into a mug or cup. Add 150mL or 5 ounces of cold water and stir for about 2 – 3 minutes, until all the powder is dissolved. It is important to drink 1.5 L to 2 L of clear fluids that are not red or purple (water, sports drinks, clear fruit juices such as apple, white grape, or white cranberry juice, broths) between doses. DO NOT DRINK JUST WATER ALONE. Drinking only water to replace the fluid losses may lead to electrolyte imbalance, particularly to hyponatremia (abnormally low level of sodium in the blood) and possibly seizures (a sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain).
WARNING: This product is not intended for routine use as a laxative. Use with caution in patients with renal (kidney) impairment, heart disease or inflammatory bowel disease. Use with caution in patients on drugs that might affect water and/or electrolyte balance e.g. Diuretics, corticosteroids, lithium. Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures and in patients at risk of seizure.
In addition to its desired action, Pico Salax Cranberry Flavour (Picosulfate Magnesium Citric Acid) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause headaches, tiredness, nausea, vomiting.
It may cause changes in electrolyte balance (e.g., numbness, skin tingling, muscle spasms, rapid heartbeat, muscle weakness). It may cause seizures, skin, diarrhea, abdominal pain.
Contraindications: Patients who are hypersensitive to this drug or to any ingredient in the formulation or component of the container. Patients with severely reduced renal function, congestive cardiac failure (a serious condition in which the heart doesn't pump blood as efficiently as it should), gastric retention (delayed gastric emptying), gastrointestinal ulceration (sores that develop on the lining of the stomach), toxic colitis or toxic megacolon (a complication of gastrointestinal conditions where the colon expands), ileus (a partial or completely blocked bowel), nausea and vomiting, acute surgical abdominal conditions such as acute appendicitis (sudden and severe inflammation of the appendix) and known or suspected gastro-intestinal obstruction or perforation. Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
