Description

Pimozide (Pimozide) is an antipsychotic agent. It is typically used to manage the symptoms of chronic schizophrenia where the main manifestations do not include excitement, agitation or hyperactivity. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Pimozide (Pimozide) is typically taken once daily, taken in the morning. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. It may be administered without regard to meals. Grapefruit juice prevents Pimozide from being broken down (metabolized) in the body and may cause an increase in side effects. Avoid drinking grapefruit juice if you take pimozide.

WARNING: Do not stop taking Pimozide (Pimozide) without speaking to your doctor. Stopping suddenly may lead to uncomfortable side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, difficulty sleeping, or unwanted movement. This medication can cause abnormal heart rhythms. Certain medications can increase the risk of a type of abnormal heart rhythm called QT prolongation, and should not be used in combination with pimozide. People who take pimozide may develop very low blood pressure causing dizziness and lightheadedness. Pimozide may cause an increase in blood sugar levels (may cause a loss of blood glucose control) and glucose tolerance may change. People with diabetes may find it necessary to monitor their blood sugar more frequently while using Pimozide (Pimozide). Pimozide may reduce alertness, especially at the start of treatment. Alcohol may increase this effect. Avoid tasks requiring alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, until you determine if the medication affects you this way.

In addition to its desired action, Pimozide (Pimozide) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause constipation, difficulty holding urine, menstrual changes, or decreased interest in sexual activity.
It may cause dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, lightheadedness, or fainting when rising from a lying or sitting position.
It may cause decreased sweating, dry mouth, sinus congestion, or weight changes.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to Pimozide or any component of the formulation, coma, history of cardiac arrhythmias (heart rhythm problems), congenital long QT syndrome (heart rhythm problems), concurrent use with QTc-prolonging agents (medications that cause heart rhythm problems), hypokalemia (low potassium levels) or hypomagnesemia (low magnesium levels), concurrent use of the azole antifungals such as itraconazole and ketoconazole, macrolide antibiotics. Brain damage, depressive disorders, Parkinson's disease (a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement), renal (kidney) impairment, liver disorders, pheochromocytoma (tumor that forms in the center of the adrenal gland located above the kidney), blood dyscrasias (blood problem), regional or spinal anesthesia (insensitivity to pain, especially as artificially induced by the administration of gases or the injection of drugs before surgical operations), family history of congenital long QT syndrome, acquired long QT syndrome, clinically significant bradycardia (slow heart rate)

Taking Pimozide (Pimozide) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.

A treatment with Pimozide (Pimozide) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Pimozide (Pimozide)
