Description

Mycobutin (Rifabutin) is an antibiotic. It is typically used to prevent mycobacterium avium complex (MAC: a life-threatening bacterial infection) in people with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus: virus that attacks the body’s immune system) infection. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Mycobutin (Rifabutin) is typically used once daily (2 capsules). However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. May be taken with or without food. For those patients who experience nausea, vomiting or other gastrointestinal upsets, it may be useful to split the MYCOBUTIN dose in half (one 150 mg capsule) twice a day with food.

WARNING: Use with caution in patients with hepatic (liver) impairment. Use with caution in patients with renal (kidney) impairment. Dose reductions may be required when treating patients with severe renal or severe hepatic impairment. Because MYCOBUTIN (rifabutin) may be associated with neutropenia (a condition that results when the body does not have enough neutrophils, an important type white blood cell that fights infections), physicians should consider obtaining hematologic (blood) studies periodically in patients receiving MYCOBUTIN prophylaxis.

In addition to its desired action, Mycobutin (Rifabutin) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause diarrhea, fever, sweat, indigestion, nausea, skin rash, headache.
It may cause stomach pain, urine discoloration, vomiting, neutropenia.

Contraindications: if you are allergic to rifabutin or any ingredients of Mycobutin (Rifabutin), if you are allergic to related medications (e.g., rifampin)

Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.

A treatment with Mycobutin (Rifabutin) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Mycobutin (Rifabutin)
