Serevent Diskus (Salmeterol)

Additional information

Serevent Diskus (Salmeterol) is typically inhaled every 12 hours. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Inhale quickly and deeply through the Diskus, hold your breath for about 10 seconds or for as long as comfortable and exhale slowly. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. 

WARNING: If used alone without corticosteroids (steroids used in the treatment of asthma), Serevent Diskus (Salmeterol) may cause death due to severe asthma symptoms. Do not stop using corticosteroid medications when you are prescribed Salmeterol. Occasionally, inhaled medications such as Serevent Diskus may cause the airways to spasm and close up, making breathing even more difficulty (bronchospasm) and can be life-threatening. This product may contain lactose. Use with caution in patients with diabetes (may increase blood sugar level), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid, a gland in the neck), or seizure disorders. 

In addition to its desired action, Serevent Diskus (Salmeterol) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause agitation, nervousness, trembling, or palpitations (rapid heartbeat). 
It may cause dizziness, headache, or trouble sleeping. 
It may cause muscle cramps, increase blood pressure, chest pain, or nausea. 

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to Salmeterol or any component of the formulation. Do not use Serevent Diskus (Salmeterol) if you have a severe allergy to milk proteins. The use of this drug as monotherapy (one type of treatment) in the treatment of asthma (used without concomitant inhaled corticosteroid) is not recommended. Do not use this drug as a treatment of severe asthma exacerbation or other acute episodes of asthma or COPD requiring intensive measures.

Taking Serevent Diskus (Salmeterol) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
