Description
Odan Sodium Polystyrene (Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate) is a potassium-removing agent. It is usually used to treat high levels of potassium in the blood called hyperkalemia. It may also have other uses.

Odan Sodium Polystyrene (Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate) is typically used one to four times daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. When taken by mouth, this drug should be taken at least 3 hours before or 3 hours after other oral medications. For patients with gastroparesis (a condition preventing your stomach from emptying properly), a 6-hour separation should be considered. WARNING: Use with caution in patients with patients with cardiovascular (heart) problems. Use with caution in patients with hepatic (liver) problems. Use with caution in patients with edema (swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in your body's tissues). In addition to its desired action, Odan Sodium Polystyrene (Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause hypernatremia (high sodium levels), hypocalcemia (low calcium levels), hypokalemia (low potassium levels), hypomagnesemia (low magnesium levels). It may cause constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting. It may cause abdominal pain, allergic reaction. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to sodium polystyrene sulfonate, similar agents or any component of the formulation, hypokalemia (low blood potassium), obstructive bowel disease (a blockage that keeps food or liquid from passing through your small intestine or large intestine), neonates (newborn) with reduced stomach motility, oral administration in neonates. Taking Odan Sodium Polystyrene (Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Odan Sodium Polystyrene (Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
