Description

Valtrex (Valacyclovir) is an antiviral agent. It is typically used to treat a viral infection affecting the skin known as shingles (herpes zoster). It is also used to treat cold sores, and to treat and prevent recurrences of genital herpes. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Valtrex  (Valacyclovir)'s dosage depends on the condition. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. Valacyclovir can be taken with or without food. If it causes stomach upset, taking it with food may help. Make sure you drink enough water to prevent dehydration while taking valacyclovir.

WARNING: Use with caution in elderly patients and reduce dosage in patients with renal impairment.

In addition to its desired action, Valtrex  (Valacyclovir) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause abdominal pain, nausea, headache.
It may cause neutropenia (blood condition characterized by low levels of white blood cells that protect your body from infections, which increases your risk for many types of infection)
It may cause signs of decreased kidney function (e.g., decreased urine production, loss of appetite, nausea).
 
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to valacyclovir, acyclovir, or any component of the formulation.

Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
