Description
Valcyte (Valganciclovir) is an antiviral agent. It is typically used to treat a viral eye infection called cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in patients with AIDS (a chronic, potentially life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)). It can also be used to prevent CMV disease in people who have received an organ transplant and are at risk of the condition. It may also have other uses.

Valcyte (Valganciclovir) is typically given once or twice daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. It should be taken with food. Swallow the whole tablet with a full glass of water. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. Do not crush, break, or chew. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. WARNING: Use caution in patients with kidney disease (dose may be adjusted). Valganciclovir can cause a reduction in certain blood cells (e.g., white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets (cells involved in clotting)) which can lead to serious problems. This medication may cause temporary or permanent suppression of fertility and may cause birth defects and cancers. In addition to its desired action, Valcyte (Valganciclovir) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause anxiety, back pain, constipation, diarrhea, or heartburn. It may cause dizziness, drowsiness, dry, red itchy skin, or fatigue. It may cause fever, headache, nausea, or vomiting. It may cause joint pain, trembling, trouble sleeping, or weight loss. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to valganciclovir, ganciclovir, or any component of the formulation. Taking Valcyte (Valganciclovir) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Valcyte (Valganciclovir) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
