Description
Vancomycin (Vancomycin) is an antibiotic. The intravenous (IV) form of this medication is used to treat serious or life-threatening infections that have not been successfully treated with other antibiotics. These infections may involve the bones, lungs, blood, and heart. It may also have other uses

The usual intravenous, (into a vein), or IV dose for adults is 500 mg given every 6 hours or 1g given every 12 hours. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Your doctor or nurse will administer this medication to you in a hospital or clinical setting. WARNING: Vancomycin can cause hearing loss. People with a history of hearing loss should not take this medication if possible. Reduced kidney function or kidney disease may cause this medication to build up in the body, causing side effects. Use with caution in patients with renal problem. During prolonged or repeated treatment with vancomycin, other bacteria or fungi may be allowed to overgrow. If your condition does not improve or worsens while taking this medication, contact your doctor. IV administration of vancomycin can cause a reaction that includes severely reduced blood pressure, nausea, chills, fever, shortness of breath, and itching. If you experience any of these symptoms, let your doctor or nurse know immediately. In addition to its desired action, this medication may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause hearing loss, dizziness, ringing in the ears. It may cause abdominal pain, nausea, taste changes. It may cause peripheral edema (swelling of the lower legs or hands). It may cause diarrhea, vomiting. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to vancomycin or any component of the formulation. Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with this medication requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.
