Description
Spinraza (Nusinersen) is an agent used for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). It is typically used to treat spinal muscular atrophy in adults and children 2 months of age and older with a genetic condition that affects the muscles and causes weakness. SMA occurs when the body does not make enough of a protein needed for muscle function, leading to muscle weakness, difficulty moving, and breathing problems. It may also have other uses.

Spinraza (Nusinersen) is usually given as follows: The first 3 doses of SPINRAZA will be administered 14 days apart: on Day 0, Day 14 and Day 28. The 4th dose will be administered about a month later, for example on Day 63. And then once every 4 months. However, your doctor or pharmacist may suggest a different schedule that works better for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not take more of this product or take it more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. This medication should be given as an injection by your healthcare professional. WARNING: Patients may be at increased risk of bleeding complications and renal toxicity In addition to its desired action, this medication may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause breathing problems, muscle weakness, joint and bone problems, or digestive problems It may cause constipation, cough, curving of the back or spine Contraindications: Do not use this medication if you have a known allergy (hypersensitivity) to any of its ingredients. Taking this medication during pregnancy is contraindicated and harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with this medication requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.
