Description

Nucala (Mepolizumab) is a monoclonal antibody that works by blocking a specific protein called interleukin-5. It is usually used alongside other asthma medicines to treat adults, adolescents (12-17 years old), and children (6-11 years old) with severe eosinophilic asthma that is not controlled by their current medications, such as high-dose inhalers. It is also used to treat Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps, a condition in which there are too many eosinophils (a type of white blood cell) in the blood, nose, and sinuses. It may have other uses as well.

Additional information

Nucala (Mepolizumab) is usually administered as a subcutaneous injection by a healthcare professional experienced in monitoring allergic reactions. It is typically given as one injection every four weeks. However, your doctor may recommend a different schedule that suits your needs better.

WARNING: Nucala (Mepolizumab) is not indicated for the treatment of acute (sudden) asthma symptoms or acute exacerbations of asthma. Do not discontinue oral or inhaled corticosteroids abruptly upon initiation of Nucala (Mepolizumab). Reductions in corticosteroid dose should be gradual, if appropriate. This medication may increase the chances of infections.

In addition to its desired action, this medication may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause headaches, injection site reactions (e.g., redness or irritation), or fatigue.
It may cause stomach pain, back or neck pain, blurred vision, or a sore throat.
It may cause a sensation of spinning, tingling, or numbness, as well as headaches or dizziness.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to Mepolizumab or any component of the formulation.

Taking this medication during pregnancy may be harmful to the baby. Women of childbearing age should use an effective contraceptive method. There is no available data on the risks of this medication for the fetus; therefore, it is not recommended for use. If you're planning a pregnancy, become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.

Treatment with this medication requires regular monitoring by a healthcare professional. Make sure to see your doctor for all scheduled appointments.

Warning

Each person may react differently to a treatment. If you think this medication may be causing side effects (including those described here, or others), talk to your doctor or pharmacist. He or she can help you to determine whether or not the medication is the source of the problem.
