Activelle (Estradiol Norethindrone) is typically used once daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. Take at the same time each day with or without food. WARNING: This medication should be used at the lowest dose that relieves your menopausal symptoms for the shortest time period possible. You should not use estrogens with or without progestins (other hormonal agents) to prevent heart disease, heart attacks, or strokes. Some women taking Activelle (Estradiol Norethindrone) have reported increased blood pressure. Your doctor should monitor your blood pressure if you are using estrogen, especially if high doses are used. Estrogens can cause changes in blood glucose (blood sugar) control for people who have diabetes or have risk factors for developing diabetes. Use with caution. Use with caution in patients suffering from asthma (a condition in which your airways narrow and swell making it difficult to breathe), epilepsy (a condition that affects the brain and causes frequent seizures), and thyroid disease. In addition to its desired action, Activelle (Estradiol Norethindrone) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause acne, back/neck pain, bloating or gas, breast tenderness
It may cause changes in menstrual flow, darkened skin, discomfort wearing contact lenses, fluid retention
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to estradiol, norethindrone, or any component of the formulation. Do not use if you: are breastfeeding, are or may be pregnant, have or have had a stroke, heart attack, or heart disease, have or have had blood clots in the legs, lungs, or heart, have or have had other diseases that increase the risk of blood clots, have endometrial hyperplasia (overgrowth of the lining of the uterus), have migraines, have or have had breast or endometrial (uterine) cancer, or other types of cancer that depend on estrogen or progestin (e.g., ovarian cancer), have partial or complete loss of vision or double-vision from eye disease related to circulation problems, have porphyria (a disease of blood pigment), have reduced liver function or have liver disease and abnormal liver function test results, or have unexpected or unusual vaginal bleeding. Taking Activelle (Estradiol Norethindrone) during pregnancy is contraindicated and harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant, or breastfeeding contact your family doctor.
