Description
Alkeran (Melphalan) is an anticancer agent. It is typically used to treat certain types of cancer such as multiple myeloma (cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell, an infection-fighting cell, called a plasma cell) and ovarian cancer. It may also have other uses.

Alkeran (Melphalan) is typically used as directed by your doctor. The dose may change depending on the evolution of your disease. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. Administer on an empty stomach. WARNING: This agent should be administered under the supervision of a qualified physician experienced in the use of cancer chemotherapeutic agents. Severe bone marrow suppression (when fewer blood cells are made in the marrow, a soft fatty substance in the cavities of bones, in which blood cells are produced) with resulting infection or bleeding may occur. Toxicity may be increased in elderly, start with lowest recommended adult doses. In addition to its desired action, Alkeran (Melphalan) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause peripheral edema (swelling of legs and hands), fatigue, dizziness It may cause low serum potassium levels, low serum phosphate level It may cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, constipation, abdominal pain It may cause anemia (number of red blood cells is lower than normal), decreased white blood cell count, fever Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to melphalan or any component of the formulation, patients whose disease was resistant to prior melphalan therapy Taking Alkeran (Melphalan) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Alkeran (Melphalan) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
