Description
Alrex (Loteprednol) is a corticosteroid agent. It is typically used for the short-term treatment of seasonal allergic eye symptoms caused by pollens (also known as seasonal allergic conjunctivitis), including redness and itching in the eye. It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Alrex (Loteprednol) is typically given as one drop into the affected eye(s) 4 times daily for up to 14 days. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Before using these eye drops, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water and shake the eye drop bottle vigorously. Do not allow the tip of the dropper to touch any surface, including your eyes or fingers. If you are using other medications in the eye, wait at least 10 minutes before applying them. If you wear soft contact lenses, instill the drops into the eye(s) first and wait 10 to 15 minutes before inserting your contact lenses. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. WARNING: This medication may cause your vision to blur temporarily. Do not drive or operate machinery until your vision is clear. The preservative in Alrex (Loteprednol), benzalkonium chloride, can discolor soft contact lenses. Loteprednol can increase the chances of getting an eye infection and should not be used for people with an eye infection. Prolonged use of corticosteroids may result in elevated eye pressure (glaucoma), use with caution in patients with glaucoma. In addition to its desired action, Alrex (Loteprednol) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause burning sensation in the eye, eye swelling or discharge, feeling like there is something in the eye, or itching of the eye or eyelid. It may cause cough, headache, nervousness, runny nose, tiredness, or sore throat. It may cause painful, dry, or sticky eyes, redness of the eye or eyelid, sensitivity of eyes to sunlight, or blurred vision. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to loteprednol, other corticosteroids, and any component of the formulation. Do not use in case of viral disease of the cornea (the clear outer layer at the front of the eye) and conjunctiva (the tissue that covers the surface of the eyeball) such as herpes simplex or varicella. Patients with mycobacterial (bacterial) infection of the eye, or fungal disease of eye structures, should not use Alrex (Loteprednol). Taking Alrex (Loteprednol) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Alrex (Loteprednol) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Alrex (Loteprednol)
