Description
Atarax (Hydroxyzine) is an antihistaminic agent. It is typically used for the treatment of symptomatic relief of anxiety. Management of pruritus (itchy skin which is an uncomfortable, irritating sensation that makes you want to scratch) due to allergic conditions and management of urticaria (red, itchy welts that result from a skin reaction). It may also have other uses.

Atarax (Hydroxyzine) is usually given four times a day. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. Administer with or without food. WARNING: Use with caution in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma (high pressure in the eyes). Use with caution in patients with prostate hyperplasia (enlarged prostate gland) and urinary structure (blockage). Use with caution in patients with lung disease, may cause over sedation in the elderly, avoid use. These events may occur at anytime during therapy and without warning. In addition to its desired action, Atarax (Hydroxyzine) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause drowsiness, xerostomia (dry mouth) and skin rash. It may cause tremor, hallucination, headache and involuntary body movements. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity (severe allergy) to hydroxyzine or any component of the formulation, early pregnancy, prolonged QT interval (your heart's electrical system takes longer than normal to recharge between beats). Hypersensitivity (severe allergy) to cetirizine or levocetirizine, low potassium levels, low magnesium levels, asthmatics (people with lung disease) who have previously experienced a serious anti-histamine induced adverse lungs effects, porphyria (a group of disorders that result from a buildup of natural chemicals that produce porphyrin in your body. Porphyrins are essential for the function of hemoglobin (a protein in your red blood cells that links to porphyrin, binds iron, and carries oxygen to your organs and tissues)) Taking Atarax (Hydroxyzine) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Atarax (Hydroxyzine) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
