Description

Betaseron (Interferon Beta-1B) is a biological response modulator agent. It is typically used for the treatment of patients with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic and disabling disease caused by the body’s own defense system attacking and destroying the protective covering (myelin) surrounding nerve fibres. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Betaseron (Interferon Beta-1B) is typically used every other day. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Interferon beta-1b is used with the guidance and supervision of a doctor. Your doctor or nurse may ask you to inject the medication under the skin at home once they have instructed you and are certain that you won't have any problems with doing it at home. Do not attempt to prepare or inject Betaseron (Interferon Beta-1B) on your own until you completely understand how to mix and inject a dose.
WARNING: This medication can decrease the number of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell that helps fight infection) and platelets (which help your blood to clot). Your doctor will do blood tests to monitor this. If you notice any signs of infection (e.g., fever, chills, or sore throat) or unusual bleeding or bruising, contact your doctor immediately.
In addition to its desired action, Betaseron (Interferon Beta-1B) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause flu-like symptoms (e.g., fever, chills, sweating, muscle aches, tiredness)
It may cause injection site reactions (e.g., skin irritation, swelling, pain, bruising, itching, bleeding)
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to interferon beta-1b, any form of interferon beta, or any ingredients of the medication, worsening or uncontrolled liver disease, if you are or may be pregnant, if you have severe depression or ideas of self harm
