Buscopan (Hyoscine Butylbromide)

Additional information

Buscopan (Hyoscine Butylbromide) is typically used once if needed, may repeat at intervals of ≥30 minutes (maximum: 100 mg/day). However, your pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Your doctor or nurse will administer Buscopan (Hyoscine Butylbromide) to you in a hospital or clinical setting.
WARNING: Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular (heart) problems. Use with caution in patients with hepatic (liver) problems. Use with caution in patient with renal (kidney) problems. Use with caution in patient with genitourinary (relating to the genital and urinary organs) or gastrointestinal (relating to the stomach and the intestines) problems. Use caution in patients with hyperthyroidism (a condition in which an overactive thyroid gland is producing an excessive amount of thyroid hormones that circulate in the blood). Use with caution in patients with a history of psychosis (a severe mental disorder). Use with caution in patients with a history of seizure disorders (a sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain). Use with caution with glaucoma (a condition of increased pressure within the eyeball).
In addition to its desired action, Buscopan (Hyoscine Butylbromide) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause drowsiness (sleepiness), dizziness (weak or unsteady), pain in the injection site.
It may cause xerostomia (dry mouth often due to decreased or absent saliva), difficulty in passing urine.
It may cause agitation, confusion, pharyngitis (inflammation of the back of the throat, known as the pharynx).
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to hyoscine butylbromide, or any component of the formulation, untreated glaucoma, megacolon (abnormal dilation of the large intestine), prostate hypertrophy (a condition in men in which the prostate gland is enlarged and not cancerous) with kidney problems, mechanical stenosis (an abnormal narrowing or contraction of a body passage or opening) of the gastrointestinal tract, myasthenia gravis (weakness and rapid fatigue of any of the muscles under your voluntary control), tachycardia (an abnormally rapid heart rate), angina (chest pain), heart failure, intramuscular (in a muscle) administration in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy. Taking Buscopan (Hyoscine Butylbromide) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method.
