Description

Calcitriol (Calcitriol) is a vitamin D analog. It is typically used to treat calcium deficiency in people with hypoparathyroidism (decrease in production of parathyroid hormones by the parathyroid glands located in the neck) caused by surgery, disease, or other conditions. It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Calcitriol (Calcitriol) is typically used three times weekly. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Your doctor or nurse will administer Calcitriol (Calcitriol) to you in a hospital or clinical setting.
WARNING: Monitor calcium levels closely with initiation of therapy and with dose adjustments, discontinue use promptly in patients who develop hypercalcemia (high blood calcium). Avoid abrupt dietary modifications (e.g., increased intake of dairy products) which may lead to hypercalcemia, adjust calcium intake if indicated and maintain adequate hydration.
In addition to its desired action, Calcitriol (Calcitriol) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause hypercalcemia (high blood calcium), headache, skin rash.
It may cause abdominal pain, nausea, urinary tract infection, high blood pressure.
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to calcitriol, other vitamin D analogues, or any component of the formulation, hypercalcemia (high blood calcium), vitamin D toxicity (state of an excess of vitamin D).
Taking Calcitriol (Calcitriol) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Calcitriol (Calcitriol) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
