Description
Coly mycin M Parenteral (Colistimethate) is an antibiotic. It is typically used to treat acute (sudden) or chronic infections (particularly a bacterium called Pseudomonas aeruginosa) which are resistant to other antibacterials or in patients allergic to other antibacterials. It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Coly mycin M Parenteral (Colistimethate) is typically administered at an average dose of 2.5 mg/kg/day given every 6 to 12 hours. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. It will be given to you by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinical setting. It is injected into the veins (intravenously IV) or into a muscle (intramuscularly IM). WARNING: Only use Coly mycin M Parenteral (Colistimethate) to prevent or treat infections strongly suspected or proven to be caused by susceptible bacteria to minimize the development of bacterial drug resistance (when the antibiotic does not work anymore). Prolonged use may result in fungal or bacterial superinfections (a second infection superimposed on an earlier one). Use with caution in patients with kidney impairment, adjusting the dose may be recommended. Impaired kidney function may increase the risk for respiratory arrest (absence of breathing). In addition to its desired action, Coly mycin M Parenteral (Colistimethate) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause kidney toxicity (nephrotoxicity) causing a rapid deterioration in the kidney function. It may cause neurotoxicity (damage to the brain or nervous system). It may cause dizziness, slurred speech, seizures, or respiratory distress. It may cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, or diarrhea. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to Colistimethate, colistin, or any component of the formulation. Taking Coly mycin M Parenteral (Colistimethate) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Coly mycin M Parenteral (Colistimethate) requires regular monitoring by a doctor. Be sure to see your doctor for all regularly scheduled appointments.Coly mycin M Parenteral (Colistimethate)
