Description

Colyte (Polyethylene Glycol 3350 Sodium Chloride Potassium Chloride Sodium Bicarbonate Sodium Sulfate (anhydrous) is a gastrointestinal lavage and laxative agent. It is typically used for bowel cleansing prior to examination (e.g. Colonoscopy) or surgical procedures requiring a clean colon (the longest part of the large intestine). CoLyte is also indicated for the treatment of constipation following consultation with your doctor. It may also have other uses.

Colyte (Polyethylene Glycol 3350 Sodium Chloride Potassium Chloride Sodium Bicarbonate Sodium Sulfate (anhydrous) is typically taken as follows: drink 240 mL (8 oz) every 10 minutes for colon cleansing before examination and drink 240 to 480 mL/day for a week or less or as recommended by your doctor for constipation. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. For colon cleansing: No solid food should be consumed during the period of 3 hours before CoLyte consumption. Rapid drinking of each portion is preferred rather than drinking small amounts continuously. The first bowel movement should occur approximately 1 hour after the start of CoLyte administration. Administration of CoLyte should be continued until the watery stool is clear and free of solid matter. For constipation: Do not take any type of laxatives for more than one week, unless your doctor has ordered a special schedule for you. Treatment for 2 to 4 days may be required to produce a bowel movement. If no bowel movement occurs in 4 days, contact your doctor.

WARNING: Consult your doctor if you have taken any other medication within two hours of when you plan to start taking CoLyte or if you have a history of electrolyte imbalance (low sodium levels in blood) or are using diuretics (water pills) or you have ulcerative colitis (abnormal reactions of the immune system cause inflammation and ulcers (lesions) on the inner lining of your large intestine) or any other inflammatory bowel disease (e.g. Crohn’s disease) or if you have difficulty swallowing or have a pronounced gag reflex or are prone to vomiting. Do not take Colyte (Polyethylene Glycol 3350 Sodium Chloride Potassium Chloride Sodium Bicarbonate Sodium Sulfate (anhydrous) if you have abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting and contact your doctor.

In addition to its desired action, Colyte (Polyethylene Glycol 3350 Sodium Chloride Potassium Chloride Sodium Bicarbonate Sodium Sulfate (anhydrous) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause nausea, abdominal fullness, bloating
It may cause cramping, gas, diarrhea. If diarrhea occurs, stop taking Colyte. 

Contraindications: Ileus (blockage in the bowel), gastric retention, bowel perforation, gastro intestinal (stomach and intestine) obstruction, toxic colitis (inflamed large bowel with damage to the intestinal wall), toxic megacolon (acute swelling of the large bowel), or if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to any ingredient in this formulation 

Taking Colyte (Polyethylene Glycol 3350 Sodium Chloride Potassium Chloride Sodium Bicarbonate Sodium Sulfate (anhydrous) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product.
