Description

Complera (Emtricitabine Rilpivirine Tenofovir) is a combination of antiretroviral drugs. It is typically used to treat HIV (human immunodeficiency virus infection which is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system). HIV is the virus responsible for acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Complera (Emtricitabine Rilpivirine Tenofovir) is typically used once daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. This medication should be taken with a meal to allow your body to absorb as much of the medication as possible. Swallow the tablet whole with water.
WARNING: This medication can cause abnormal heart rhythms. Certain medications (e.g., sotalol, quinidine, thioridazine, chlorpromazine, pimozide, moxifloxacin, mefloquine, tacrolimus) can increase the risk of a type of abnormal heart rhythm called QT prolongation, and should not be used in combination with Complera. This medication may also cause increased breakdown of bone by the body. If this happens, bones lose strength and bone fractures may occur. Antiretroviral medications such as Complera have been known to cause mood swings and symptoms of depression. It may also increase blood sugar levels. In addition to its desired action, Complera (Emtricitabine Rilpivirine Tenofovir) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause headaches, sleep disorders, changes in cholesterol levels and abnormal dreams.
It may cause diarrhea, nausea, flatulence (gas) and risk of bone fractures.
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity (severe allergy) to emtricitabine, rilpivirine, tenofovir alafenamide, or any component of the formulation. Concurrent use of carbamazepine, systemic dexamethasone (cortisone), oxcarbazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, proton pump inhibitors (medication that treats acidity) (e.g., dexlansoprazole, esomeprazole, lansoprazole, omeprazole, pantoprazole, rabeprazole), rifampin, rifapentine.
Taking Complera (Emtricitabine Rilpivirine Tenofovir) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. There is no available data regarding the harm of Complera (Emtricitabine Rilpivirine Tenofovir) for the fetus, therefore it is not recommended to use it. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Complera (Emtricitabine Rilpivirine Tenofovir) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
