Description
Cortef (Hydrocortisone) is a corticosteroid. It is typically used to treat allergic reactions, some skin conditions, severe asthma (narrowing of airways), lupus (a disease where the immune system attacks your own tissues and organs), and arthritis (a degenerative joint disease). It may also have other uses.

Cortef (Hydrocortisone)'s dosage depends on the condition being treated. Your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a schedule that is more appropriate for you. Hydrocortisone should be taken with food to reduce the chance of an upset stomach. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. WARNING: This medication can increase blood pressure, especially when high doses are used. You may require a diet with increased potassium, vitamins A, B6, C, D, folate, calcium, zinc, phosphorus, and decreased sodium. Hydrocortisone may worsen blood sugar control for people with diabetes, a diet low in sugar is preferred. When taken by mouth, Cortef (Hydrocortisone) may mask some signs of infection and put people at increased risk for new infections. This medication can increase the risk of osteoporosis (brittle bones). In addition to its desired action, Cortef (Hydrocortisone) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause bloating, changed sense of taste, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, and upset stomach or stomach irritation. It may cause dry skin, hair thinning, itching, redness of face or cheeks. It may cause increased appetite, increased sweating, unusual hair growth, and skin changes (discoloration, stretch marks, thinning). It may cause high blood pressure and irregular heartbeat. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to hydrocortisone or any component of the formulation. Do not use in case of fungal infections. Live or live attenuated virus vaccines should not be used when taking hydrocortisone. Taking Cortef (Hydrocortisone) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Cortef (Hydrocortisone) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
