Description

Cytomel (Liothyronine) is a thyroid agent. It is typically used to treat hypothyroidism (a condition in which the thyroid gland is not able to produce enough thyroid hormone). It may also have other uses.

Additional information

Cytomel (Liothyronine) is typically used once daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. Administer this drug at the same time each day, with or without food.
WARNING: Use with caution in patients with adrenal insufficiency (a condition in which the adrenal glands do not produce adequate amounts of steroid hormones), symptoms may be exaggerated or aggravated. Use with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus (a group of metabolic disorders characterized by a high blood sugar level over a prolonged period of time). Use with caution in patients with myxedema (severely advanced hypothyroidism) because symptoms may be exaggerated or aggravated.
In addition to its desired action, Cytomel (Liothyronine) may cause some side effects, notably:
It may cause cardiac arrhythmia (a problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat), tachycardia (an abnormally rapid heart rate), low blood pressure.
It may cause difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, weight loss, headache, insomnia (difficulty falling asleep).
It may cause fever, hypersensitivity reaction, hair loss, elevations in liver function tests.
Contraindications: Uncorrected adrenal insufficiency.
Adequate and well-controlled studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in the first trimester of pregnancy (and there is no evidence of risk in later trimesters).
