Description
DDAVP (Desmopressin) is antidiuretic agent. It is typically used as antidiuretic replacement therapy in the management of diabetes insipidus, management of the temporary polyuria (production of abnormally large volumes of urine) and polydipsia (abnormally great thirst) following head trauma or surgery in the pituitary region (brain). It may also have other uses.

DDAVP (Desmopressin) is typically used once or twice daily at bedtime. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. May administer with or without food. Food may reduce/delay absorption although does not affect antidiuretic activity WARNING: Desmopressin can cause hyponatremia (low blood sodium). Severe hyponatremia can be life-threatening. Measure serum sodium within 7 days and ~1 month after initiating therapy or increasing the dose and periodically during treatment. More frequently monitor serum sodium in patients ≥65 years of age and in patients at increased risk of hyponatremia. If hyponatremia occurs, desmopressin may need to be temporarily or permanently discontinued In addition to its desired action, DDAVP (Desmopressin) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause hyponatremia (low blood sodium) It may cause hypertension (high blood pressure), headache, dizziness, chills, nostril pain Contraindications: Known hypersensitivity to desmopressin or any component of the formulations, hyponatremia or a history of hyponatremia (low blood sodium) Taking DDAVP (Desmopressin) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant, contact your family doctor. A treatment with DDAVP (Desmopressin) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
