Description
Deferoxamine (Deferoxamine) is a chelating agent. It is typically used to treat acute (immediate) iron overdose. It is also used to treat chronic (long-term) iron overload caused by repeated blood transfusions. It may also have other uses.

Deferoxamine (Deferoxamine)'s dosage depends on condition/body weight. Your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a schedule that is more appropriate for you. Your doctor or nurse will administer Deferoxamine (Deferoxamine) to you in a hospital or clinical setting. WARNING: Your doctor may tell you to take a vitamin C supplement. Follow all instructions about how much vitamin C to take and when to start taking it. Using too much vitamin C while you are using deferoxamine can cause heart problems. Do not take vitamin C supplements without your doctor's advice if you have heart failure. Ocular (eyes) and auditory (hearing) disturbances have been reported when Deferoxamine was administered over prolonged periods of time, at high doses, or in patients with low ferritin (a blood protein that contains iron) levels. Visual tests and audiometry (audiometry is a technique used to measure the ability to hear sounds) are recommended periodically in patients treated for prolonged periods of time. Toxicity is more likely to be reversed if symptoms or test abnormalities are detected early. In addition to its desired action, Deferoxamine (Deferoxamine) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause headaches, nausea, muscle pain, skin rash, urine discoloration. It may cause injection site reactions including pain, swelling, low blood pressure, kidney failure. It may cause brain disease, blurred vision, fever. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to deferoxamine or any component of the formulation, patients with severe renal disease or anuria (failure of the kidneys to produce urine). Taking Deferoxamine (Deferoxamine) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.
