Description
Diprivan (Propofol) is a general anesthetic agent. It is typically used to induce or maintain anaesthesia (a state of controlled, temporary loss of sensation or awareness that is induced for medical purposes). It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Diprivan (Propofol)'s dosage depends on the condition, it is usually given once before the surgical procedure. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. It is administered in a hospital setting by intravenous infusion or intravenous injection. When administered by intravenous (existing or taking place within, or administered into, a vein or veins) infusion, a controlled-infusion device (e.g., syringe) is recommended. WARNING: patients with impaired heart function, abnormally low vascular tone (sepsis) may be more susceptible to hypotension (low blood pressure). Management of hypotension (low blood pressure) may include discontinuance of propofol, increasing the rate of intravenous (existing or taking place within, or administered into, a vein or veins) fluid administration. Monitor sedated patients continuously for early signs of hypotension (low blood pressure) and bradycardia (low heart rate), also monitor for adverse lung effects. Potential for microbial contamination of the injection and consequent development of fever, infection and other life-threatening illness, or death. In addition to its desired action, Diprivan (Propofol) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause neurodevelopmental (low nerve functions) effects in the fetus. It may cause hypotension (low blood pressure), apnea (potentially serious sleep disorders in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts) and airway closure. It may cause low oxygen level, bradycardia (low heart rate), arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), tachycardia (high heart rate) and high cholesterol levels. It may cause hypotension (low blood pressure), hypertension (high blood pressure), burning and stinging and pain at injection site. Contraindications: Known hypersensitivity (severe allergy) to propofol or any ingredient in the formulation, hypersensitivity (severe allergy) to eggs, egg products, soybeans or soy products. Taking Diprivan (Propofol) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. There is no available data regarding the harm of Diprivan (Propofol) for the fetus, therefore it is not recommended to use it. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor.Diprivan (Propofol)
