Description
Elmiron (Pentosan) is an analgesic agent. It is typically used to ease pain, swelling, and irritation of the bladder (a membranous sac, in which urine is collected for excretion). It may also have other uses.
Additional information
Elmiron (Pentosan) is typically used three times daily with water, at least one hour before or 2 hours after meals. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. WARNING: This medication may increase the risk of bleeding for people who are at high risk of this (e.g., those taking medications that increase bleeding risk or who have medical conditions such as bleeding ulcers (lesions)). Use Elmiron (Pentosan) with caution in patients with hepatic (liver) impairment. In addition to its desired action, Elmiron (Pentosan) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, dizziness, hair loss, abnormal liver function tests. It may cause headaches, itching, nausea, rash, blood in the stool, dizziness. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to pentosan, or any component of the formulation. Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Elmiron (Pentosan) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
