Description
Fosrenol (Lanthanum) is a phosphate binder agent. It is typically used to lower phosphate levels in patients with end stage kidney disease (gradual and permanent loss of kidney function). It may also have other uses.

Fosrenol (Lanthanum)'s dosage depends on the condition being treated. Your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. The tablets must be chewed completely and not swallowed whole. Administer this drug with or immediately after meals. WARNING: Use with caution in patients with biliary obstruction (blockage of one or more bile ducts in your body, bile is a yellow or greenish liquid that is made by the liver that helps the body to digest fats). Use with caution in patients with hepatic (liver) problems. Use with caution in patients with gastrointestinal (stomach and intestine) problems. In addition to its desired action, Fosrenol (Lanthanum) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting. It may cause tooth injury while chewing the tablet, hypersensitivity reaction. It may cause abdominal pain, low blood pressure. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to lanthanum carbonate or any component of the formulation, bowel obstruction (a partial or complete blockage in the intestine), fecal impaction (accumulation of hardened feces in the lower colon), ileus (partial or complete non-mechanical blockage of the small and/or large intestine). Taking Fosrenol (Lanthanum) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Fosrenol (Lanthanum) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
