Description
Gleevec (Imatinib) is an anticancer agent. It is typically used for the treatment of cancers such as leukemia (cancer of the blood). It may also have other uses.

Gleevec (Imatinib) is typically used once or twice daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. Administer with a meal and a large glass of water. WARNING: May cause bone marrow suppression (anemia, neutropenia (decrease in disease-fighting cells), and thrombocytopenia (low platelets counts, which help blood clot)), usually occurring within the first several months of treatment In addition to its desired action, Gleevec (Imatinib) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause chest pain, edema (swelling), facial edema, peripheral edema (swelling of the lower legs or hands) It may cause alopecia (hair loss), diaphoresis (excessive sweating), exfoliation of skin, night sweats, pruritus (itching), skin rash It may cause fluid retention, hypokalemia (low potassium levels in the blood), weight gain It may cause abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia (indigestion), heartburn, nausea, upper abdominal pain, vomiting Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to imatinib or any component of the formulation Taking Gleevec (Imatinib) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Gleevec (Imatinib) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
