Description
Imuran (Azathioprine) is an immunosuppressant agent. It is typically used for adjunctive therapy in prevention of rejection of kidney transplants and treatment of active rheumatoid arthritis (a disorder that affect the joints), to reduce signs and symptoms. It may also have other uses.

Imuran (Azathioprine) is typically used once daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your pharmacist. Administering tablets after meals or in divided doses may decrease adverse stomach and intestinal events. WARNING: Chronic immunosuppression (suppression of the immune system) with azathioprine increases the risk of malignancy (cancer) In addition to its desired action, Imuran (Azathioprine) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause malaise It may cause nausea and vomiting, diarrhea It may cause leukopenia (decrease in disease-fighting cells in your blood), neoplasia (the formation or presence of a new, abnormal growth of tissue), thrombocytopenia (a low blood platelet count. Platelets are colorless blood cells that help blood clot) It may cause hepatotoxicity (liver damage) Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to azathioprine or any component of the formulation, pregnancy (in patients with rheumatoid arthritis), patients with rheumatoid arthritis and a history of treatment with alkylating agents (e.g., cyclophosphamide, chlorambucil, melphalan) may have a prohibitive risk of malignancy with azathioprine treatment Taking Imuran (Azathioprine) during pregnancy may be harmful for the baby. Women of childbearing potential should use an effective contraceptive method. Pregnant women should not use this product. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant or breastfeeding, contact your family doctor. A treatment with Imuran (Azathioprine) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
