Description
Intuniv XR (Guanfacine extended-release) works by relaxing blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow. It is typically used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (a mental health disorder that includes a combination of persistent problems, such as difficulty paying attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior) in children who are at least 6 years old. It may also have other uses.

Intuniv XR (Guanfacine extended-release) is typically used once daily. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. If you forget a dose, contact your pharmacist. Take at the same time each day (either morning or evening), swallow the whole tablet with water, milk, or other liquid. Do not administer with high-fat meal. WARNING: Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular (heart) problems. Use with caution in patients with renal (kidney) problems. Use with caution in patients with hepatic (liver) problems. In addition to its desired action, Intuniv XR (Guanfacine extended-release) may cause some side effects, notably: It may cause drowsiness (feeling abnormally sleepy during the day), headache, dizziness (weak or unsteady). It may cause abdominal pain, decreased appetite, fever, blurred vision. It may cause hypotension (low blood pressure), bradycardia (slower heart rhythm), skin rash. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to guanfacine or any component of the formulation. Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. If you're planning a pregnancy or become pregnant, or breastfeeding contact your family doctor. A treatment with Intuniv XR (Guanfacine extended-release) requires regular monitoring by a doctor.
